COACH JEFF
HOUSE
Bringing with him a tremendous amount of coaching
experience, advance scouting, game preparation as well
as practice planning, Jeff House enters his 20th season
coaching basketball. He spent six plus seasons as a
member of the New York Liberty coaching staff – where he
has been instrumental in the team’s run to the 1999,
2000 and 2002 WNBA Eastern Conference Championships, and
three appearances in the WNBA Finals. When Jeff left the
Liberty he was one of the most senior bench assistants
in the WNBA. “Winning championships is what you strive
for each season, we were WNBA Eastern Conference
Champions 3 out of 5 years,” stated House, “it was a
great experience.”
House initially joined the Liberty in 1998 as video
coordinator after spending the previous campaign
(1997-98) as a member of the New York Knicks’ game night
video staff. In January 1999, Jeff was appointed to the
full-time position of assistant coach video
coordinator.
House's responsibilities included assisting with
on-court coaching duties – focusing on both post and
perimeter players, working with players on individual
skill development in and out of season, assisting in the
planning of practice, scouting player personnel in both
the college ranks and in Europe, planning the Liberty
offensive game plan and post game evaluation, as well as
advance team and player scouting. Working out of the
Liberty’s state-of-the-art Training Center, he was also
responsible for supervising and training the video
operations staff, as well as a staff of nearly 20
regional advance scouts. These staff’s created player
edit tapes, broke down game film into offensive and
defensive sets and organized the information on the
advance scouting of opponents for the team and
staff.
Jeff's first coaching stint was at McQuaid Jesuit
High School in Rochester, NY, while he was an
undergraduate at Nazareth College. At McQuaid, he served
as an assistant to former Knicks and current Houston
Rockets head coach Jeff Van Gundy in 1985. In 1986 Jeff
was a key component to McQuaid’s run to the Class B,
Section 5 New York State Championship.
House graduated from Nazareth College in 1987,
earning a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and from
Jacksonville University in 1991 with a Masters Degree in
Teaching, Guidance & Counseling. He spent the next
ten years honing his skills as an assistant coach,
including three seasons at the University of Lowell as
assistant to current Miami Heat head coach Stan Van
Gundy (1988-91) and four seasons as an assistant coach
at Rutgers University with Bob Wenzel. (1992-95). While
at Rutgers University in 1995, House served as head
coach for the People-to-People Sports Holland All-Star
Tour. He directed a combination of Big East, Atlantic 10
and Big 10 All-Stars to a 6-1 record, losing only to
Holland's National Champions. “Throughout my 10 years in
the college game I learned a great deal, both through
success and failure. I have a plan on what to do and
what not to do to build a program and make it
successful,” stated House.
House is a member of the National Association of
Basketball Coaches, the Women’s Basketball Coaches
Association and serves as President & on-court
director of House's HOOP Headquarters, a company he
created in 1996.
Jeff and his wife Ann Leonard-House, the head
women's volleyball coach at Rutgers University, have
been married for nine years and reside in Middlesex
County, New Jersey. The coaching duo are the proud
parents of two children, a daughter and a
son.
